Celebrating South Africa

Pupils at Clun Primary spent the week celebrating South African Life. The week culminated in a South African Assembly involving dance, songs and story telling about the evil system of apartheid and tributes to Nelson Mandela for his 27 years in prison.During the week my parents, Walter and Adelaine, captivated the youngsters with their own accounts of South Africa having been jailed, banned and finally forced in exile in Britain for their anti-apartheid activities.
I joined the terrific concert that rounded off the week to speak of my experiences growing up in apartheid South Africa and how as a child I’d been prevented from playing school rugby and football with or against anyone who did not have white skin.

The week was organised as part of a Connecting Classrooms project. Head teacher Mrs Nicola Morgan visited South African schools with a view to forming links between the schools. All children from Nursery to Year 6 have been involved in learning about South Africa.
